Captain Martyn Hanlon

Captain Martyn Hanlon is a Master Mariner with over 49 years’ experience in the commercial shipping industry. During this time, he spent 19 years’ operating deep sea on general cargo ships, tankers, passenger and supply vessels in various roles.

In addition to his Master Mariner’s qualification, he is a fully qualified Warfare Navigation specialist and has worked on several military staffs providing active frontline navigational support to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in several operational theatres worldwide.

In 1995, his seagoing career was followed by over 27 years serving as a Senior Marine Pilot at the UK Haven Ports, handling everything from small coasters, bulk carriers, tankers and passenger ships, to some of the largest container vessels in the world, calling at the Port of Felixstowe. During this period, he conducted over 10,240 pilotage operations and was a training, and examining pilot.

In March 1990 Captain Hanlon was shortlisted by the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) for the ‘Admiralty Shadwell Testimonial Prize’, for surveying work in Norway, and in 1995 spent 3 months in S America surveying and conducting marine operations in the Rivers Demerara and Berbice in Guyana. Between 1976 and 1995 Captain Hanlon spent several years operating in the Far East, during which time he conducted survey operations in the Sunda Straight, Lombok Straight and Java Sea on behalf of the British Admiralty and UK Hydrographic Office.

Captain Hanlon has conducted several accident investigations for the UK Department for Transport, Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) and Ministry of Defence.

Captain Hanlon is experienced in London arbitration and has regularly given expert witness evidence at LMAA tribunals.
